Veteran Republican state Sen. Jackie Winters, the first African-American Republican elected to the Legislature, died at age 82 on Wednesday, May 29, after a battle with cancer.

A memorial service honoring Sen. Jackie Winters will take place at the Oregon State Capitol at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 13 in the Senate Chambers.

A reception will follow the memorial and the public is invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, Sen. Winters’ family requests that donations be made to one of the senator’s favorites causes. They include the Oregon Capitol Foundation, P.O. Box 13472, Salem, OR 97309; Liberty House, 375 Taylor St. NE, Salem, OR 97301; or the Oregon Food Bank, which she is credited with helping form in the 1970s, 7900 NE 33rd Drive, Portland, OR 97211.
