On Martin Luther King Day volunteers around the country converge on projects where they can make a difference through working with others. This year, because of the coronavirus pandemic, we can't join together with others as usual. But from Oregon Shakespeare Festival to Living Jazz, organizations around the country have stepped up to offer us other ways to celebrate, learn and work for justice online. The events are free of charge.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival has put together this list of free online events:

Why We Can't Wait

Oregon Shakespeare Festival challenges everyone to read Dr King's book Why We Can't Wait to become more aware of who he was, his leadership, and how nonviolent direct action can bring systemic change and build communities that are equitable and inclusive.

Take the challenge and join in the Martin Luther King Day live discussion of the book on Facebook on Jan 18. You can find out more on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival website

Watch the video

Vance Beach of the Black Alliance for Social Empowerment (BASE) is interviewed on his experience going through the 5-week reading challenge of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s book Why We Can't Wait. You can watch the premiere on YouTube.

Documentary Film Festival

The Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University is hosting a free, four-day webinar and film festival from the evening of Jan. 15 through Jan. 18, 2021.

On the eve of the presidential inauguration, the festival will feature over 15 documentaries as well as musical performances and panel discussions that speak to Dr. King's unanswered question: "Where do we go from here?" Find out more and watch the films.

Living Jazz concert

Living Jazz invites all of us to celebrate unity and freedom in their 19th annual musical tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "In the Name of Love" takes place on Sunday, delivering inspiration, reflection, and the hope we need to stand united as we enter 2021.
